And as of 2018, search engines like Google are punishing websites that are not optimized for a mobile platform. Google will give websites without proper mobile responsiveness lower rankings, or, they might not rank you at all. Which is a big problem.

How can you tell if you have a mobile-responsive or mobile-friendly website?

    1. A mobile-responsive site is built so that the template responds to the screen it is on. So, when you view a site on your smartphone or tablet you will see that objects and text may condense but they are more or less the same.     2. A mobile responsive site maintains its design on smartphones, tablets and desktop. If viewing your site on a smartphone or a tablet changes design elements with some images, text changes or limited functionality – it’s a good sign you don’t have a responsive site.
    3. The final tell that your site is not responsive – if you view your site on a smartphone or tablet and it just looks like a smaller version of the full site – it is not responsive. You may think that this is ok – after all, your site still works and all links/text are present but this is not a user friendly site. With text so small users have to zoom in to navigate and search engines will negatively rank you because of it.

One of the most important things for website performance is positive user experience. If users are having issues loading pages, seeing your content, or even trying to reach out to you – they will leave your website and you miss out on business opportunities.

We’re talking about website speed here. If a website is slow loading, or lags on performance, it can cause users to leave your website within seconds of actually arriving.

They won’t even take the time to get to know what you do or how you can best help them.

Users can be impatient. If they feel like your site is ‘broken’ or get frustrated with slow load times they will move onto the next site/company on their Google search.

Many things go into making sure your website is performing at the top of its game.

Making sure that your overall website size is small (meaning data size). Image and file sizes should be as small as they can without losing quality. You also want to make sure your server has enough processing power, proper tools and bandwidth availability, etc.

If you are still lagging behind due to website ‘size’, there may be plugins and coding tricks that can help reduce size and increase overall speed.

However, a good place to start is to see where your website comes up within Google’s Page Speed Insights tool.

Just put a website url in and Google will score you based on overall performance and what areas need to be looked at and fixed in order to improve score.

3-     Basic SEO Metadata

What the heck does that mean?

SEO Metadata is what search engines like Google use to index and categorize websites. Search engines review the metadata on sites when pulling up websites for searches. With proper metadata on your site, you’ll show up when people search for terms that match your data.

That is the basics of search engine optimization, or SEO. You are improving and tweaking your website so search engines know who your audience is and how best to find you then pull you up for appropriate user searches. This will ultimately lead to more traffic on the website, new leads and thus more business.

While there is a lot that can go into a good SEO campaign, there are certain elements that are needed for even just basic website optimization.

Does your website include the following on all pages:

  • H1 (Header1) Page Titles: (would look like <h1> in the code)
  • Full urls with individual page titles in them: (would look like
  • Meta Keywords: strings of phrases that are imprinted within the code on a page that tell search engines what to look for in order to bring page up for appropriate searches)
  • Meta Description: a sentence describing the overall summary of the page – with a good keyword you want people to find you with inserted somewhere in the sentence. It is not viewed on the page itself, but within the code or when you see the page show up within search engines.

  • Page Title Tag: this is the text that appears in the top tab of your web browser when on a web page. It also appears as the title of the page when viewing listing within search engines. This is very limited in the amount of characters, but should have basic phrase related to topic of page and a keyword you want to have the page come up for within

Without any basic SEO Metadata utilized on your website, search engines are not seeing the full potential of your website and thus won’t bring you up for proper results – meaning your website is not really optimized as it should be.
